Somerville Little League Plans Big Opening Day Ceremony

In honor of the 75th Anniversary of Little League baseball, Somerville Little League has a very special Opening Day Ceremony planned for this Saturday, April 26th, at 10AM. Starting with the parade from the High School down Highland Avenue to Central Street to Somerville Avenue, ending at Conway Park. Somerville Police and Fire will be on hand in addition to the Somerville Police Honor Guard, who will present their colors in remembrance of the Marathon Bombing Victims and the two heroic Boston Firefighters who recently lost their lives in the line of duty. A Somerville High School Youth Chorus member will sing the national anthem, joined by some veterans of Somerville Little League's past. They will join former Red Sox player Sam Horn to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, at Conway Field, at 10:45AM. Majors and Minors games will immediately follow the ceremony. Come on down and cheer the kids on!! For more information, email Sean Fitzgerald at .

SLL Player Pool
by posted 04/16/2014

Hello Baseball Parents.

Somerville Little League is establishing Player Pools for our Minor and Major Division players.

One of the league goals for this year was to have more teams and smaller rosters. The smaller rosters allow kids to play more baseball. With smaller rosters a team will occasionally experience a shortage of players on game day. Each team is required to have nine players present at game time for the game to be played.

A pool player is a rostered player who’s team is not playing at that time. It is a great opportunity for players to get extra playing experience while helping out a team. When a manager of a team is made aware of attendance issues that do not allow 9 players to make a game, that manager will ask for a player from the pool.

When players are called to fill in a spot for another team, they get extra play. It is a great opportunity to play for other managers and play with friends they have not been able to play with in the past. If a pool player is unavailable for that day, they can say no thanks. If a player signs up and saves just one game from being cancelled, 20 other players will have gained by that player offering his/her time.

If your player is interested in playing more baseball and helping out the league, please email me at with your players name and current team.

Thank you once again for supporting Somerville Little League.

Somerville Little League update for March & April
by posted 03/22/2014

It's slowly warming up outside and the fields are just about free of snow.  Baseball will be here before you know it!

SLL wil form Majors & Minor team rosters the week of March 23rd.  Majors & Minors coaches will have their team rosters in a week or so, then will contact players in early April.  Practices will commence soon after depending on when the fields are open for play, and when we have access to the indoor batting cages.  Your coach will keep you posted on practices.

Opening day for Majors & Minors is Saturday April 26th, with some Majors teams playing their first game on Friday April 25th, and some Majors & Minors teams playing games on Opening Day.  We will have Opening Day ceremonies in the morning with a parade of teams marching from City Hall to Conway Field, followed by a ceremony, and then games.  More information on Opening Day will be forthcoming.

Major / Minor games: During the season Major teams will have games scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday evenings at 5:30, and Minor teams on Tuesday or Thursday evenings at 5:30 or Saturday afternoons.  Practice days for teams are dictated by the coaches.

Farm League team rosters will be put together in early April, and Farm coaches will contact their teams soon after that.  Farm league games will begin in early May, and will be scheduled for weekday evenings at 5:30 or Saturday mid-day.
Practice days for teams are dictated by the coaches.
We are in need of more Farm coaches this season.  Please consider stepping up to coach a Farm team.  It's a really fun experience.  Several parents/guardians can combine forces to coach a team if need be.  Contact if interested.

T-ball skills clinic begins Saturday May 3rd at Conway field from 9 - 10:45 am, and runs for seven consecutive Saturday mornings.  Teams will be formed on that first Saturday when we hand out the players' hat, shirt, and socks.

The season will end in mid to late June.  Major & Minor teams playoffs begin in mid June and will run to late June.

All players in all divisions will be supplied with a hat, shirt and socks in their team color.  Bats, balls, catching equipment are also supplied by SLL.  Players must supply their own baseball pants (grey) and baseball glove.

Thank you,

SLL
